Background of the Study
Workplace diversity has gained increasing attention as a factor that can influence organizational performance. It encompasses a broad spectrum of differences among employees, including cultural background, gender, age, and educational experiences. In organizations like Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), which operates in diverse regions such as Kaduna State, leveraging diversity can enhance creativity, innovation, and problem-solving abilities within teams (Salim & Umeh, 2024). Teams with diverse members bring a variety of perspectives and approaches to the table, which can lead to more effective decision-making and improved overall team performance. However, managing diversity within teams also comes with challenges, such as communication barriers and potential conflicts arising from differing cultural norms.
Kaduna State is a culturally diverse region, home to various ethnic groups and religions, making it a fertile ground for studying the impact of workplace diversity on team performance. For GTB, which employs individuals from various backgrounds, understanding how diversity influences team dynamics, collaboration, and productivity is crucial for fostering an inclusive and high-performing work environment (Aliyu & Usman, 2024). Despite its importance, the precise relationship between workplace diversity and team performance within the Nigerian banking sector, particularly in Kaduna, has been under-explored.
This study seeks to assess the impact of workplace diversity on team performance at Guaranty Trust Bank in Kaduna State, examining whether diverse teams perform better or face challenges due to the diversity of their members.
